It is impossible to live in New Orleans, as an architect, and not understand the importance of how historic preservation contributes to its sense of place. A respect for preservation has nothing to do with copying the past; it has everything to do with learning from it. Architect R. Stephen Chauvin often designs and builds with architectural artifacts prevalent in New Orleans. Such elements,when discovered, act as teacher, muse and seed from which many designs evolve.

In the acrylic Edra series, Chauvin seeks to reduce and evaporate the chair into a simple and dynamic geometric form. He manipulates the tetrahedron between rectangular planes in hopes of seating the body, object, eye, and psyche. Click here to see Octavia Gallery with Edras
